Project: |
New Functional Metal-Organic Frameworks for (Enantio)selective Catalysis and Sepration
|
Abstract: |
Limited natural resources and an increasing demand for enantiomerically pure compounds render catalysis and especially asymmetric
catalysis to be a key technology. Although the field of asymmetric catalysis has been dominated for a long time by homogeneous catalysis because of the
excellent selectivity and activity obtained, heterogeneous catalysts can offer even more than facile separation or recycling. It has been shown that
activity and selectivity comparing favorably with homogeneous catalysts can be obtained and novel, efficient reaction mechanisms can be employed to
solve remaining synthetic problems.
The modular de novo construction of MOFs seems to be ideal for the integration of catalytically active (chiral) functions. An interdisciplinary
cooperation between organic chemists (chiral linker synthesis), inorganic chemists (MOF synthesis), and technical chemists (asymmetric catalysis and
sepration) provides the complementary expertise needed for the preparation of highly ordered metal-organic catalysts and allows a rational design,
synthesis and the unequivocal structural characterization to give tailor-made asymmetric catalysts for new applications.

Results: |
|
|
Di- and tricarboxylate linker were modified using chiral oxazolidinones, successfully converted to the high porous MOFs (Zn3(ChirBTB-1)2(DEF)3, Zn3(ChirBTB-1)2(DEF)3, ChirUMCM-1 at al) and applied in asymmetric Mukaiyama aldol reactions. The MOFs have been also investigated in adsorption, separation and diffusion studies. Inter alia, a MOF-filled HPLC-column was used to investigate the selective separation of various isomers. On the oxazolidinone modified MOFs an enantioselective interaction could be observed. Solid-state NMR was used for investigation of the effect of probe molecules on the MOFs.
